Why Cookie-Cutter Venues Fall Flat—and What to Do Instead

Seems like many venues look the same, feel the same, act the same. Guests walk away with - “oh, that was nice” instead of “WHAT AN EPIC PARTY!” Lots of wedding venues have the same vibe -  maybe blah, ordinary, or same as all the others? It isn’t their fault. They are designed to attract an audience, and they plan on customers to go with the flow of their design.

Choosing a farm venue could be that thing to do instead. Connected to nature, tranquil and customizable, a farm wedding can give you that down-to-earth experience you are looking for.

If you are the type of person to step away from the cookie cutter venue, here are a few things to consider for a unique farm wedding:

  • Picture what you want

    • What would happen if you were in charge of what you want for your celebration? You can choose something authentic, personal and connected to nature. With open space, you can create a unique experience for you and your guests.

    • Do you see yourself outdoors? Surrounded by nature? Formal, informal? Elegant, rustic? Low key decor, over the top decoration? As you visit any location, ask yourself if it will set the stage for what you want. Can you see yourself there?

  • Feel the vibe

    • What type of “feel” are you looking for? Intimate, relaxed, comfortable? Charming, serene, peaceful? Surrounded by nature, trees, stone walls?

    • Picture the day unfolding. Can you feel relaxed and comfortable in this setting?

  • There are so many things to think about

    • You may feel uncertain about handling all the details of your wedding in a farm setting. You are right - there is a lot to think through. If you are not choosing a cookie-cutter location, you are deciding to do what is meaningful and authentic for you. What else will you need? If you can’t quite picture all the details, or if you worry you might miss a few things, are you comfortable with the hosts? Do they give you permission to get excited? Do you have their support for your vision?

    • Do the hosts support your creativity and help create a contagious positive mood? What if you didn’t hear so many “no” answers for how a venue is set up and “this is how we do it  here” explanations, and instead “Let’s do that!”

  • You really want to make your event your own

    • Even if there is a long list of questions you still need to answer, you remain certain you want to design your own wedding. Trust your gut on this. If you cave to outside expectations and go with the flow answers, you may feel let down.
